Publishing Reflection

Creating a newsletter can be a great way for students to present information because it is different and fun. I think it might be kind of hard for younger students, but for the older students it could work really well! For example, in 3rd grade, students are asked to figure out what their point of view is based on the text. You could have the students create a newsletter showing how their view differs (or is the same) from the author's point of view. Have them use the newsletter to show specific quotes from the text where the points of views are different or similar. It could also be fun to insert pictures that went along with the text. Another way 3rd graders can use newsletters is in health education. One of the core standards is to understand how to manage stress. I think it would be fun for the students to create a newsletter showing other people how to cope with stress and how to improve their mental health. Maybe we could even print off the newsletters and post them around the school for others to look at and get information from. In social studies, 3rd grade students are asked to describe how communities have adapted to different environments or even changed to fit the environment better. Students could create a newsletter explaining how one community in particular adapted to the environment. This could be done in groups or alone. The students could use pictures of the community or the environment and they could provide specific examples of how the community adapted.
